Push email in PDAs

I am seeing more and more people using Blackberries, and I am really starting to like the system. One big problem: few applications to use with it, and obviously no significant medical applications are available. Update: Unbound Medicine contacted me that they DO have good medical applications for the BlackBerry, such as

Harrison?s Manual of Medicine , Taber?s Medical Dictionary, Medicine Central, Nursing Central and Anesthesia Central. I am glad there are companies investing in other platforms, but but still not nearly as many medical apps when compared to PalmOS/Windows Mobile.

I started to think about what I particularly liked about the Blackberry. An absolute first was the push email capabilities, which is starting to become necessary for me. See, my personal email rarely has something that needs to be acted upon immediately, however my professional email often has things that I need to take care of right away. Another plus for the Blackberry is the very decent keyboard, so that I could reply to an email right there. Or page someone. Or manage my to-do list. There are really many options that make the RIM platform quite attractive.

To the other side: what does Palm or Microsoft have that could do the same ? The Treo is clearly a good solution that can act as an "almost push" situation, it has a decent keyboard and is readily available. Windows Mobile 5.0 also can be used as a push solution, when connected to an Exchange Server with the appropriate installation. I don't think that many businesses will support it, and especially not my employer. But it could also act as an "almost push" solution just like the Treo, and to be honest I haven't used one of these PDA/phone hybrids with the WM 5.0 (nice overview of WM 5.0).

I have yet to see a device that offers the best of 3 worlds: connectivity, PDA functionality and mobile telephony. So far, the Treo is my favorite.
