Hmmm, Weird, Why, WHO?
So if you're as addicted to your Treo as I am, or even just addicted to Palm OS, you've come to realize that it's the OS that's the beauty behind the device. Palm OS is fast, pretty reliable, predictable, and most importantly, programable with great open source resources commonly found on the web. So when we learned on Friday that PalmSource (the developer/owner/master of Palm OS) was bought by some unkown Japanese mobile-browser developer (Access), I started thinking about where Palm's going!
We've all seen the much-talked about Treo 670 running Windows Mobile (as previously posted on this site), and we've all heard rumors of Palm's failed attempts at developing Cobalt, so maybe the time has come where Palm will become a hardware manufacturer and leave the OS to the "other guys."
So what does this mean? Well first, you need to realize that Palm and PalmSource went their seperate ways all the way back in 2003, and obvisiouly 2.5 years later we still have Palm OS, so don't think that your recent purchase is about to become obsolete. But it does inspire some thought into the idea of a Linux based device and materializing of a true Palm manufactured Windows Mobile device.
I guess only time will tell, but it is going to be interesting see the battle between Linux (where Access wants to take PalmOS) and Windows Mobile (where Microsoft and Palm want to take Palm OS).
