Bad aspects of LifeDrive
I do like the new LifeDrive, but I was talking to a few people and collected a few thoughts about why it might not be so good.
1) Battery life: the new LifeDrive introduces a hard-drive that certainly will consume a lot more power. Just look at iPods, for example, their battery does not last very long due to the fact that hard-drives have mechanical components. While this can be circumvented by delivering a more powerful battery, it will also make the device a lot heavier.
2) Hard Drive damage: how many times have you dropped your PDA in the last year ? If you said one or more, if your PDA had a hard-drive, there are good chances that it might have been damaged. I drop my PDA from my pocket a few times a month. It survived so far, but I would be very cautious if I had to buy one with a HD.
3) Start-up time: again, mechanical parts take time to start. One cool thing about PDAs is that they are ready to go instantly after pressing the power button. It might be so that it may take a few seconds for the system to be able to save/load files on the HD, since they all have a boot-up routine.
I will look forward to see how these devices do in real life situations. Maybe they are more resistant than I thought, but with my past experiences with HDs they are very fragile.
