Windows Mobile 2005 coming next year

Brighthand has a nice story about the upcoming Windows Mobile 2005. It will improve some areas that certainly are poor: Pocket Office will hopefully be usable and worth the memory used. A very welcome upgrade will be ActiveSync 4.0, which is probably my greatest complaint about Windows Mobile; it is so slow and has so many problems syncing and installing programs that it looks like an alpha version of some ancient project. Just look at how nicely the PalmOS syncs with the desktop: fast, few errors.

Just like the Microsoft tradition says, Windows Mobile 2005 will likely be much more memory-consuming and complex and of course only be supported by the newest PDAs. Unless it offers something really extraordinary, I plan to stick to my Dell Axim X30 which works just fine and is cheap.

Looking at the competition, though, I am not sure why Palm is also slow to debut their PalmOS 6.0 (Cobalt). I think they are behind in terms of newer features such as multimedia, multitasking, but their current OS is really slick and well-designed. Maybe Cobalt won't bring that much extra, but do we really need more at this time ?
