My impressions of my Dell Axim X30
I have been using my new PDA for 2 weeks now. My Dell Axim X5 was stolen during a trip, so I ended up getting the Dell Axim X30 with Wi-fi and Bluetooth, since the deal was just unbeatable. I really tried to find a PalmOS solution that was able to deliver Wi-Fi and Bluetooth at such a low price (US$249), but was disappointed to not find even one that came close.
So I ended up ordering the nice little gadget and have been using it ever since. What bothers me the most is not the device itself, but the horrible implementation of what they call Activesync. It is just too buggy, slow and it ticks me off everytime I have to sync.
The device itself is great. I am not using Bluetooth since I don't have a BT phone (yet), but Wi-fi works great. The ability of Windows Mobile 2003 SE to natively support landscape and portrait screen orientation is another plus. I installed also Pocket Informant 5 and mobile Micromedex (still don't have Epocrates). Unfortunately Hopkinx Antibiotics Guide is not yet compatible with Windows Mobile 2003, so I am stuck for now with my paper version of Sanford 2004.
Usage has not been a problem, and as matter of fact this Axim is a lot faster than my previous Axim X5. I got the 325 Mhz version, and I am pretty happy about both speed and battery consumption. Looks could be better, though, and I think Dell could have designed it with a few more touches, but that does not really bother me.
In general I think the Axim X30 was an excellent buy and currently fulfills my needs as a resident. I still need to figure out how to sync using Wi-Fi, and from what I've seen this could be difficult.
